Independence and Responsibility
Independence and responsibility are foundational principles of Contractor Standards. These principles define how participation frameworks operate and clarify where responsibility begins and ends.
They exist to ensure transparency, fairness, and clarity for both service providers and consumers.
Independent Service Providers
All service providers participating under these standards operate as independent businesses.
- Providers are not employees, agents, or representatives of any platform, registry, or authority
- Providers determine their own pricing, service terms, and availability
- Providers perform services under agreements made directly with customers
Role of Participation Frameworks
Participation frameworks that reference Contractor Standards provide infrastructure and organization, not supervision or control.
- They facilitate participation and access, not employment
- They do not set pricing, scopes of work, or service outcomes
- They do not supervise, direct, or manage service delivery
Responsibility for Work Performed
Responsibility for services rests solely with the independent service provider performing the work.
- Providers are responsible for the quality and outcome of their services
- Providers are responsible for complying with applicable laws and regulations
- Providers are responsible for customer communication, billing, and dispute resolution
Why This Matters
Clear separation of independence and responsibility protects everyone involved.
Consumers understand who is performing the work and who is accountable. Service providers retain control over their businesses. Participation frameworks can operate transparently without misrepresenting their role.
These principles are essential to building fair, trustworthy, and scalable service infrastructure.
